Creating a Dial-Up icon

  1. Double click on the My Computer icon, located in the upper left hand corner of your monitor.

  2. In My Computer, locate the Dial-Up Networking folder. Double click on the dial-up networking icon.

  3. In Dial-up Networking, Double-click on the Make New Connection icon.

  4. On the first screen of the Make new Connection Wizard, enter Channel 1 for the name of the computer you are dialing.
    Then click the Next button.

  5. Enter the Area code and Telephone number for Channel 1. (If you don't know your local access number, go to http://www.channel1.com/support/access.html or call 617-864-0100 to find out what number you should enter).
    Then click the Next button.

  6. This will bring you to a screen that tells you "You have successfully created your dial-up networking icon! Click Finish!"
Click the Finish button. (Sorry to disappoint you, you're nowhere near finished.).

  7. Now you will be able to see your Channel 1 Icon next to the Make New Connection icon.
Use your Right Mouse Button and click on the Channel 1 icon. You will see a list of options appear.
    Click on the word Properties.

  8. You will find yourself on a screen with a number of tabs. The first of these tabs is General and it will show you your basic information. Make sure the phone number is correct, and there is a check mark next to Use area code and Dialing Properties.

  9. Now click on the tab that says Networking. On this page, you want to make sure that the only items that have check marks next to them are Enable software compression and TCP/IP. NOTHING ELSE should have a check mark.
When you have made sure of these settings, click the TCP/IP SETTINGS button at the bottom of the page.

  10. You will now find yourself on the TCP/IP settings page. Look at the below screen shot. This is exactly how you want to set up this page. There must be a dot next to Server Assigned IP Address, and a dot next to Specify name server addresses.
    Your primary DNS is: 199.1.13.9
    Your secondary DNS is: 199.1.13.13
    The WINS are all 0.0.0.0
There are two checkmarks at the bottom.

When you have made these changes, click the OK button at the bottom of the page.

  11. You should now be back at this screen. Click on The tape that says Security

Take this opportunity to fill in your username and password.

  12. Click OK again until you find yourself back at the Dial-up Networking window.

  13. Right mouse click on the Channel 1 icon again, and select Create Shortcut.

  14. Windows will probably warn you that it can't create a shortcut here, but will put one on the desktop; click "Yes".

  15. You can now close the dial-up networking window. Search for and find your new Dial-up networking icon on your desktop. It will look like this:
