Windows NT Remote Access Services
"How To..." Documentation from Channel 1



The following pages contain information on how to configure Remote Access Services in WindowsNT  4 to work with your Channel 1 PPP account.

WindowsNT has a component called Remote Access Services (RAS) which enables it to act as either dial-in client or server in a Microsoft network. The following instructions assume that you have already installed RAS and your modem successfully. If RAS is not installed, please go to our NT Troubleshooting page or for more detailed instructions on installing these components, please consult your WindowsNT manual.


Configuring RAS

1. Double Click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop. You should have an Icon called Dial-Up Networking. (If you do not have an Icon called Dial-Up Networking, you have not installed RAS. Please go to our NT Troubleshooting page or for more detailed instructions on this component, please consult your WindowsNT manual.)

2. Double Click on the Dial-Up Networking Icon. If this is the first time you are installing a dial-up connection, the Dial-Up Networking Wizard should automatically start. If you have already installed a dial-up connection, click on the NEW button and the Wizard should start.

3. The Wizard will ask you for a name for this connection. Type "Channel1" or any name that you would like to call this connection, then click the NEXT button. Click here for screenshot.

4. For the next screen you will need to check all 3 boxes; Calling the Internet, Send Plain Text Password, and Know TCP/IP Address before Calling. Then click the NEXT button. Click here for screenshot.

5. You will now have to input the Channel 1 number you are dialing. You should have written this number down when you signed-up for an account. If you do not remember it, you can search for your local access number by clicking here. Then click the NEXT button. (You can also use the Boston area number "617-500-4111" until you find your local number. Long distance charges may apply.)

6. In the next screen, select "Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP)", then click the NEXT button. Click here for screenshot.

7. The next screen will ask you what script to use. Select "Automate with this script" and then pull down the menu to "Generic login". Then click the NEXT button. Click here for screenshot. If you do not have "Generic login" as an option, you will need to select "use terminal window" and have to input your username and password after dialing.

8. The Wizard will now ask you for YOUR IP Address. Simply leave this set to "0.0.0.0" and your IP address will be assigned when you dial in. Then click the NEXT button. Click here for screenshot.

9. Next you will need to enter the IP Address of the DNS Server. Enter "199.1.13.9". Leave the WINS Server address at "0.0.0.0".Then click the NEXT button.Click here for screenshot.

10. Your are now done with the Dial-Up Networking Wizard so click on "Finish".

11. Your Channel 1 Connection should now attempt to dial in. A pop-up box will ask you for your Usernname, Password, and Domain. Enter your username in all lower case, enter your password in the correct mixed case, and leave Domain blank. Check "Save Password" if you do not want to re-enter this information the next time you dial. Then click OK. Click here for screenshot.

 

Your computer will now attempt to dial in.When the dialog disappears, you are connected to Channel 1 and your PPP session has started. You may then start to use your Internet applications. The above information is the bare minimum needed to set up WindowsNT Remote Access Services. Again, if the details are not sufficient, it is recommended that you consult the documentation included with WindowsNT or consult the Microsoft Home Page.
