Windows 95 and 98 Dial-Up Networking
The following pages contain information on how to configure Dial-Up Networking
in Windows 95 and Windows 98 to work with your Channel 1 PPP account. The Windows 98
setup will look slightly different, but is basically the same. Customers using Windows
3.x normally connect to Channel 1 using the
Trumpet Winsock dialer.
On 95/98, Dial-Up Networking is the connection method of choice.
One fast way to see if Dial-Up Networking has been installed on your system, is to double click on
My Computer, on the desktop. If Dial-Up Networking has been installed you will see its folder next to
the Control Panel folder and you may then skip to the Creating a Dial-Up
Networking Icon section of this tutorial. If it does not appear, then you must
install the Dial-Up Networking components.

- Start by selecting Add/Remove Programs from the Control Panel. Go to
the Windows Setup tab. Double-click the Communications icon from the scroll box.
- Select the Dial-Up Networking Option. Click OK.
- Double click on My Computer, then locate and double click on the Dial-Up Networking folder. Double-click
on Make New Connection. Enter Channel1 for the name of the
computer you are dialing. Click Next.
- Enter the Area code and Telephone number for Channel 1.
(If you don't know your local access number, go to http://www.channel1.com/support/access.html
or call 617-864-0100). Click Next and then click Finish.
- Under the Dial-Up Networking window, right-click on the newly created
Channel1 icon and go to Properties.
- Click Server Type. Under Advanced Options, check only Enable Software
Compression. Under Allowed Network Protocols check only TCP/IP. The other check-boxes should
be left blank.
- Click TCP/IP Settings.

(note: if you have requested a static IP, select Specify an IP address and enter it here).
Select Specify name server addresses. Under Primary DNS enter 199.1.13.9. For Secondary DNS
enter 199.1.13.13. All other entries should be left empty. At the bottom, leave
Use IP Header Compression and Use Gateway on Remote Network checked.
Click OK two more times.
- Right-click on the Channel1 icon again, and select Create Shortcut. Windows will probably warn you
that it can't create a shortcut here, but will put one on the desktop; click "Yes". If it does make the shortcut in
this folder, then you can just drag it to the desktop. When you're ready to connect, just double-click (left button) on this icon.
You should probably check the settings in your network control panel first (see below).
- From the Control
Panel, double-click the Network icon. The Network window shows the network
components installed on your system. Dial-Up Networking requires only that you have Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP
installed. Client for Microsoft Networks will allow you to save your Dial-Up password, but it is
not required. Other components in the network control panel may relate to a Local Area Network or other
functions of your system. If your computer is part of a network, we strongly recommend that you
consult your network administrator before changing the components in the Network Control Panel.
Your system probably has Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP installed already. If so, you can skip the next two steps.
- To install TCP/IP, click Add, which will take you to the Select Network
Component Type window. Select Protocol as the type of network component you want to install.
Click Add. (Note: if you are missing Dial-Up Adapter, select Adapter instead
of protocol here).
- Select the Network Protocol: Microsoft is the manufacturer and TCP/IP
is the protocol. (Microsoft is also the manufacturer for Dial-Up Adapter).
Click OK. Go back to the Network window and you will now see TCP/IP as one of the installed
network components.
- When Dial-Up adapter is installed on newer systems, all three network protocols are often installed along
with it. For Channel 1, you only need TCP/IP. If you have NetBEUI installed, you may experience difficulties.
If you are not on a network, you should probably remove NetBEUI. If you are on a network, only remove NetBEUI if
it is pointing to your Dial-Up Adapter (NetBEUI --> Dial-Up Adapter), but not if it is pointing to your ethernet
card (for example, NetBEUI --> 3Com Etherlink III...).
- From the Network window, select TCP/IP from the scroll box, and click
on Properties. (Again, if you're on a Network, be sure you click on the TCP/IP which points to Dial-Up Adapter).
Under the IP Address tab, select Obtain an IP Address automatically.
Under the Gateway tab, be sure that there are no gateways defined (from previous connections, etc).
Under the DNS configuration tab, be sure DNS is disabled
WINS resolution should also be disabled.
Under the advanced tab, the Property window should contain None.
The Bindings tab should contain no entries, unless you have Client for Microsoft Networks installed,
in which case there should be an entry for that under Bindings.
Click OK two times.
- Reboot your system so that the network set-up will take effect.
- From the Dial-Up Networking window, double-click the Channel 1 PPP icon.
Or click on the shortcut you made on your desktop.
Enter your login name and password in the appropriate boxes. They are case sensitive, so be sure
you have entered them properly.

A small window will appear displaying the status of the connection.
- If the connection is successful, you will see a "connected at..." message showing the speed you have connected
at. You can then start using your Channel 1 internet utilities.
Your machine should be equipped with the Internet Explorer web browser (look for a blue 'e'). You can use this to browse the web and
download new software. You can find many useful freeware programs at http://www.channel1.com/support/share.html.
If you don't have explorer or any other web browser, it is possible to download software using the ftp utility
that comes with Windows. To use it, first connect to Channel 1 with the Dial-Up icon you just made,
then follow these instructions. It is much easier to download with a browser,
so you might just want to download a browser through the ftp method below and then get other software from the web.
- Click on the Start Button, then click on Run
- Type in " ftp ftp.channel1.com " and click "OK"
- Next you should see "User (www.channel1.com:<none>): ", type in " ftp "
(If your FTP window suddenly closes, it means the site is full. Try again later.)
- When you see the line "Password:", type in your e-mail address
- You are now logged on to the FTP server
- Type in "cd  /pub/channel1/"
- Next type in " binary "
- Type in " hash "
- a. For Netscape, type " get g32e30p.exe " and it will place the file on your desktop for easy access.
b. For Internet Explorer, type " get ie4setup.exe "
and it will place the file on your desktop for easy access.
- When you see "226 Transfer complete." and get the ftp prompt back, the file is done downloading.
For a 32 bit e-mail program, we give out Eudora Light, which is an excellent free email package.
You may have outlook express bundled with your internet explorer-- this is another good
email program.
- Type " cd  /pub/channel1/ "
- Type " binary ", then type " get eul303.exe " and it will place the file on your
desktop for easy access.
- Once the file is copied, type " quit " and the connection will
be closed, and you are ready to install your software. Just double click
on the file.
The above information is the bare minimum needed to set up Windows 95 Dial-Up
Networking. There are other options and settings that the user can select as
necessary. If the details are not sufficient, it is recommended that you
