How to Ftp in Windows
The following pages contain basic information for configuring and using the ftp
program, Ws_FTP, with your Channel 1 account. If you do not have Ws_FTP, you
can download it from the
Channel 1 FTP site. Download the 16-bit version
(ws ftp.zip) or the 32-bit version (ws ftp32.zip).
Configuring Ws_FTP
Understanding Ws_FTP
Transferring a File
1. Double clicking the Ws_FTP icon will bring up the Session Profile window.

- Profile Name is just a convenient way to remember that you are
connecting to Channel 1.
- Host Name is the unique machine name where your 10 MB of file space
resides. For Channel 1 customers, the host name is 199.1.13.9
- Leave Host Type on auto detect.
- User ID is the same user/login name used to connect(through Trumpet Winsock
for example) to Channel 1. For example, tester
- Password is the same password used to connect to Channel 1.
All other entries can be left blank for now. Also make sure that
the boxes for Anonymous Login, Save Password, and Auto Save Config are NOT
checked.
Click OK.
2.If the connection is successful, the main Ws_FTP window will appear.
If you receive a "login failure" message, check your information and try again.
Two small windows appear at the top of the screen, one labeled Local
System and the other labeled Remote System.

-
Local System shows the current directory of the hard drive on your
computer, for example, C:\Internet\FTP. You will see two more windows
below this. The first shows all the subdirectories (if any) under the
C:\Internet\FTP directory. The bottom window shows all the files in
the C:\Internet\FTP directory. Double-clicking on any subdirectory will
again show all the subdirectories and files under that.
- Remote System shows your home directory at Channel 1. For example, if
your login/user name is tester then your home directory is
/usr/homes/tester.
1. Before transferring files between computers, it is necessary to select the
proper mode for transfer, ASCII or Binary. You can choose either one by selecting
the appropriate circles at the bottom of the window. Ordinary text documents
(.txt, .doc, .htm) are transferred in ASCII mode. Images, compressed files,
archived files, and executable files (.gif, .jpeg, .zip, .tar, .exe) are
transferred in Binary mode.
2. To copy a file, for example whatsnew.txt, from your computer (Local
System) to your account at Channel 1 (Remote System), click
and highlight the file. Click here to view a picture Next click, the right (lower) arrow
in the middle of the window, you will see the transfer process take place, and
a copy of the file will appear in the Remote System window.

***NOTE: The files in your home directory at Channel 1 are allowed to have
extensions longer than three characters. For example, index.html. The
files on your personal computer are allowed to have extensions only three characters
long. For example, index.htm. If you transfer the file index.html
from your home directory at Channel 1 to your personal computer (the opposite of
the above example) the last character of the file extension will be deleted. On
your computer the file will end up with the name index.htm.
3.To end the FTP session, click on the Close button at the bottom of the window
and exit the program.
Ws_FTP also allows you to do other things such as deleting files, renaming files,
and creating directories. You are encouraged to experiment with these features
as necessary. If you have any further questions,or comments, write us at
support@channel1.com.
